Acids, Bases, and Salts
Magnetized Na+, Cl-, H+ and OH- pieces are used to demonstrate ionic compounds such as acids, bases, and salts. They are interchangeable to show how ions form these compounds. By putting different amounts of H+ and OH- pieces out, students can determine how acidic or basic a solution is. They can also show the buffering ability of a solution.
All the pieces of the pH scale puzzle are removable, and students learn the concepts of the pH scale as they put it together. The pieces are color-coded to help students visualize these concepts. Students will build the pH scale as they learn what each number of the scale represents. At the same time, students will learn how two solutions differ in their hydrogen and hydroxide ion concentrations.
